How do I make Opal foolproof?

Opal has multiple features to help make your Opal setup foolproof. To implement these options, please follow the steps below.

Set your Rules to "No Unblocks Allowed" and "No Resets Allowed"

If you'd like to have less options to edit your Rules (including Schedules, Time Limits, and Open Limits), it's best to use "No Unblocks Allowed" and/or "No Resets Allowed". If you use those options, your Rules will only be available to edit in the following situations:

  • If you have a currently running Schedule set to "Unblocks allowed," you may edit it
  • If you have a currently running Schedule set to "No unblocks allowed," you may only edit when the Schedule ends; otherwise, you MUST use your Emergency Pass to exit
  • If you have a currently running Time Limit set to "Unblocks allowed," you may edit it
  • If you have a currently running Time Limit set to "No Unblocks Allowed," you'll only be able to edit the Time Limit before today's Time Limit is reached, or on days when it isn't active; otherwise, you MUST use your Emergency Pass to exit
  • If you have a Open Limit with "Resets Allowed," you may edit it
  • If you have an Open Limit with "No Resets Allowed," you'll only be able to edit it before you've opened it for the first time today or on days it isn't active; otherwise you MUST use your Emergency Pass to exit

Implement a Screen Time Passcode

To help make your Opal Rules foolproof, you may implement a Screen Time Passcode on the iOS version of Opal. A Screen Time Passcode is a 4-digit code set in your iPhone's Settings that prevents Opal's access to Screen Time from being disabled. Available if you upgrade to iOS 26.4, having a Screen Time Passcode means that once it is set, it must be inputted to toggle off Opal's access to Screen Time.

Implement the Opal PIN code

To enhance the security of your Opal rules and set-up, you may enable an Opal PIN code on your device or on your children's device (if you're using Opal's Parental Controls features). This feature will require that you use a 4-digital PIN before unblocking apps, editing rules, changing service lists, signing out, deleting your account, or changing uninstall protection. To access this feature, ensure you are on the newest version of the iOS app here.

Implement App Uninstall Protection

To prevent yourself from deleting Opal or other apps, you may enable our App Uninstall Protection feature. This feature may be enabled by following these steps:

  • Tap on "Home"
  • Tap on "Profile" (accessible from the top right corner)
  • Tap on "Settings" (accessible from the top right corner)
  • Scroll down to "Advanced"
  • Toggle on "App Uninstall Protection"

If you do not see the App Uninstall Protection feature available, please ensure that you've updated to the newest iOS version here.

Hide Opal from your Home Screen

To assist with making Opal foolproof, it is now possible to hide the Opal app from your Home screen on the iOS version. To do so, take the following steps:

  • Exit the Opal app
  • Long press on Opal from your Home screen
  • Tap "Edit Home Screen"
  • Tap "Remove from Home Screen"

Lock your Screen Time Access

Depending on what version of iOS you are on, it is now possible to lock Opal's Screen Time access. To do so, follow the steps here.

Implement an Opal Passcode from your device Home screen

To assist with making Opal foolproof, it is now possible to create an Opal Passcode (which is separate from implementing a Screen Time Passcode) on the iOS version. To do so, take the following steps:

  • Exit the Opal app
  • Long press on Opal from your Home screen
  • Tap "Require Passcode" or "Hide and Require Passcode"
  • Enter your iPhone Passcode
  • Tap "Hide App"

This action will mean that Opal will no longer be visible on your iPhone, except in a few places such as Settings. Your passcode will be required to reveal, open or use Siri with the app. For more information on that feature, follow the steps here.
